Let’s dive in!

3 Ways to Stay Ahead of the Curve in AI Art

#1: Use open source to train your own AI model

We want to democratize access to AI and let everyone around the world benefit from it, independent of where they’re from and what their economic situation is. The last thing we want to do is to limit this really important technology to only the biggest companies and biggest economies in the world.

We do that by sharing our code, meaning anyone around the world can download our code into their local drive. If you have the capability, you can then tweak it to your own specifications, and use it for free.

- Motez Bishara

Training your own AI model in art allows you to tap into the cutting-edge of artistic innovation. By understanding and shaping the algorithms that drive creativity, you gain the ability to push the boundaries of artistic expression, staying ahead of the curve and creating art that resonates with the future.

If this feels overwhelming, check out the following tutorial on how to do this on Stable Diffusion.

If you’re looking for inspiration on the possibilities, check out our recent Innovation Laboratory alum - Wildy Martinez - on her recent success of training her own AI model for the first time.

#2: Treat AI as your collaborator

HUG Artist KEZIAI had a unique insight on the role of AI as collaborator in the latest issue of Stable Digest.

There’s a parallel between creating with AI and directing. Working with AI feels like directing in some ways; instead of directing a crew, you’re directing AI. With both there is collaboration.

There’s an art to storytelling whether in a still or moving image, and all elements of the mise-en-scène add up to a layered and nuanced scene.

Story can be told within a frame (looks between characters, action, the way your eye moves around the frame) in the moving frames of a film (time, dialogue, art direction) or in a curated series of stills (order, movement, colour: from one image to another).

I love to play with all the elements of colour, character, emotion, movement, atmosphere, lens, style, wardrobe, composition, concept, novelty and story whether creating with film, photography or AI.

- KEZIAI, AI Artist

As you work with AI as a collaborator, it can provide different outputs and different iterations of things you hadn’t yet thought of. That is one of the nicest things about working with AI models — they can present you out-of-the-box ideas you wouldn’t necessarily have had on your own. That in turn can spur you to think of other avenues and expand your art in unimaginable ways.

#3: Be a first mover

Being the first at a new process can propel people into the limelight and give them a boost. But in the end, it’s the same as for any space, consistency is key.

Always remember that you need to be consistent in the space to make a name for yourself - it will take a lot of time, it will take a lot of networking, and a lot of work outside of just creating your art.

Social media is incredibly important - go on there and become consistently active in the community, engage with artists and buyers while honing your craft.

- Amli, AI Artist and Educator at Stability AI

One of the biggest lessons we find in HUG Artist Amli’s wisdom is something we have heard in prior interviews with Jordan Kantor of Art Blocks and Jack Butcher - consistency, community, and making more art.

Whether you are creating your own Profile on HUG to access our educational resources and Open Calls or joining Stability AI’s Discord to stay up to date, community will always be a key player in helping you go further, stay inspired, and keep ahead of the curve.

Closing Thoughts

One of the key lessons one needs to remind themselves when working at the forefront of innovation is that you are a part of a community. We are in this together.

So, let that be an invitation for you to join this incredible conversation. Become a part of the AI art community, and contribute to how this technology will shape the future.

🎙 On the Crypto Cafe with Randi Zuckerberg podcast, each guest is joined by an emerging artist who will get the opportunity to be mentored by them live.
