Masterful Negotiation: 3 Steps to Landing the Best Deals for an Artist
Negotiation is a highly critical skill for artists navigating the dynamic and often unstructured landscape of the creative industry. But, letās be honest - negotiations are never easy. š¬
Whether you are securing commissions, pricing your artwork, or establishing partnerships, the ability to negotiate effectively can have a significant impact on an artist's career trajectory. In this article, weāll cover 3 essential steps for artists to master negotiation, so that you can foster mutually beneficial agreements while honoring your creative integrity and value.
Before we start, hereās a quick reminder from artist Mumbot on embracing and knowing your worthā¦ with the help of a simple analogy - the humble potato š„.
I know I'm a small potato, but is that so bad? No, it's actually quite the opposite of bad. Potatoes are cool. They are delicious and comforting. They've been around for like 8,000 years... which means they're in it for the long term! Potatoes are totally underrated... did youā¦ twitter.com/i/web/status/1ā¦

#1: Understand your value
To negotiate effectively, you must first understand your intrinsic value within the artistic ecosystem.
Begin with a thorough assessment of your skills, talents, and unique artistic voice. Recognize what sets you apart, so you can articulate your worth with confidence and clarity. If youāre not sure where to start, here are a couple of suggestions:
Research market standards to gain invaluable insights into prevailing rates and terms.
Reflect on your past accomplishments and experiences so you can point to tangible evidence of your artistic merit and professional credibility.
Understanding your value will allow you to better advocate for fair compensation and equitable agreements.

#2: Think win-win to build mutually beneficial relationships
Successful negotiation hinges on the cultivation of genuine, mutually beneficial relationships.
Strive to engage authentically with collectors, galleries, agents, and peers, and focus on fostering connections built on trust and respect. The key here is to seek common ground and find aligning interests. This would allow you to transform negotiations into collaborative endeavors, and think of them more as enduring partnerships versus mere transactions.
This is how it's done.

Take the recent partnership between NFT collection Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and NFT marketplace Magic Eden as an example. As part of Magic Edenās new marketplace launched, BAYC agreed to sunset support for marketplaces that did not honor creator royalties. This is a win-win for both BAYC and Magic Eden ā for the former, it secures one of their sources of income, and for the latter, it allows them to take market share from other marketplace competitors.
š” HUG Tip: The next time you negotiate with someone, an institution or even your partner, practice the art of actively listening and seek to understand their needs and interests. A phrase you can use to demonstrate this approach is: āLet's explore how we can create value together.ā
#3: Stay flexible
Flexibility is integral to successful negotiation, as it can help to shape the course of your discussions and soon later, outcomes.
Start by identifying your priorities, and anchoring your negotiation strategy with clarity and purpose. To do so, make sure you are aware of what your non-negotiableās are, as they are as important (if not more important!) than understanding your primary objectives. After all, they help to provide a solid foundation for your discussions, while also allowing room for exploration among various options.
Always remember that negotiation thrives on adaptability. At the same time, if you cannot get over certain non-negotiableās, it is better to know that early so you donāt end up wasting your time and can move onto the next better opportunity.
